Hospital-acquired pneumonia in non-intubated patients (nvHAP) is a frequent and serious complication. Pneumonias increase the mortality risk inhospital, prolong hospital stays and cause high healthcare costs.

Good news is that a large proportion of these pneumonias can be prevented if suitable preventive measures are taken. Regular oral care (toothbrushing) and mobilization during the hospital stay have proven to be effective.

In the hectic hospital routine, these simple and effective measures are sometimes overlooked or not systematically implemented. Although many patients could carry out these measures themselves, patients or their relatives are rarely informed about the preventive aspects of oral care and mobilization and are not directly approached to participate.

In our project, we aim to develop suitable «solutions» (such as short videos, posters, interactive products, etc.) together with representatives of patients, relatives and hospital staff to inform, remind and generally empower patients and relatives to help prevent pneumonia.

To do this, we use a patient-centered «human-centered design» approach. In a first step, we will investigate where the needs of patients and relatives lie (needs assessment). In a second step, we will develop appealing solutions together with patients, relatives, designers and hospital staff in a workshop. In a third step, we will evaluate the solutions.

Our aim is to develop solutions for which there is a need, and which can be implemented cost-effectively and promptly. They should help to reduce the infection rates of nvHAP by enabling patients and relatives to play a competent and effective role in prevention work.

This project is a collaboration between researchers from the University of Zurich, the University Hospital Zurich, the Zurich University of the Artsand two PPI (Patient and Public Involvement) representatives.
