From the very beginning, research and development has been a pioneering and content-defining pillar/core activity of the DHD Living Lab. Staying close to users' needs, we identify issues that are topical and urgent. We use participatory and creative approaches from design research to set thematically relevant and attractive research priorities. In interdisciplinary collaboration with outstanding partners from industry, practice, and the national and international university context, the DHD Living Lab has already successfully launched and started a significant number of second and third-party funded research projects in the first few years. A lively exchange between the respective research groups within and beyond the DHD Living Lab contributes to a better understanding of the complex challenges in the healthcare context and has a mutually beneficial result.
The DHD Living Lab sees itself as an agile structure that follows the principle of curiosity. We are constantly expanding our expertise and strengthening our skills in the field of digital health solutions. We are happy to share our knowledge. In order to drive innovation forward as inclusively and sustainably as possible, the DHD Living Lab focuses on offering services for a broad spectrum of users. Whether in terms of design and development, including ideation, conception, realization, and implementation of a concrete (digital) (product) solution; or in terms of processes, guidelines, training, communication; or in terms of research, the DHD Living Lab builds on a toolbox of know-how and puts together tailor-made service offers, from coaching and consulting to full project responsibility from start to finish.
Challenges in the context of health will continue to have a great, and likely growing, impact on our society in the future. For the DHD Living Lab, it is clear that experts at the interface of public health, ethics, and design not only have a future, but also a responsibility. It's all about the right mix: The DHD Living Lab provides guidance on various approaches to strengthen a sound theoretical basis on the one hand, while demonstrating how to couple methodological expertise with practical skills on the other, all within the context of sound interdisciplinary work. Continuing education modules such as the «Digital Health Design» module of the WinterSchool ZHdK give participants the opportunity to gain insights into current projects of the DHD Living Lab, while also serving as a guide for how to approach creative, human-centered design methodology. These modules as well as the model of the DHD Living Lab generally inform and inspire others to approach their own questions in new ways.
